Gautam Adani on how Ratan Tata shaped his business decisions and philosophy

Industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata died at 86

New Delhi: Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, has called Ratan Tata the “perfect renaissance man” in a tribute remembering one of the most prolific entrepreneurs of his generation.

“To describe him merely as one of the greatest industrialists of our time is a gross understatement. Ratan Tata was a remarkable man with extraordinary abilities that transcended traditional business boundaries. There was hardly a sector where he did not leave his mark,” Mr Adani wrote in The Economic Times.

“It is no surprise that his journey and his work have inspired generations of entrepreneurs in India and abroad. I am one of the countless individuals who have benefited immensely from his influence. Analyzing his legacy would take thousands of pages, but I briefly share three key areas where he shaped my business decisions and philosophy,” Mr Adani wrote about the Tata Sons chairman emeritus and philanthropist.

Ratan Tata died at the age of 86, a day after he posted on X that he would have to undergo regular medical checkups due to his age.

Mr Adani wrote that his group’s international ventures were greatly influenced by Ratan Tata – one of the first people to truly believe in India and the potential of Indians.

“…Among his many legacies, one that stands out for me is how he made Tata and corporate India global. He was among the first to tell the world that India was standing tall and could compete on a global stage. He carried the Indian flag to the shores, not just to build a great company but to establish an Indian imprint rooted in our heritage, culture and pride. His international endeavours through Tetley, Corus and Jaguar Land Rover were an inspiration to me when we decided to go beyond our homegrown facilities to Australia, Sri Lanka, Israel and now Africa,” Mr Adani wrote.

“Secondly, the development of our greenfield Navi Mumbai International Airport had many challenges and was a Sisyphean project. When I was evaluating it, at that crucial moment, Ratan Tata’s words of encouragement were what moved the needle for me. Now that this airport is soon going to become a reality, he will be greatly missed.

“Finally, for him, success was never just about profit but about purpose. His deep commitment to nation building and his belief that businesses must work for the larger good has left an indelible mark on us. As one of the leading infrastructure developers in India, there is no greater purpose for us than to serve India. The idea behind our efforts is that what we do should benefit every Indian.

On this philosophy, we crafted a vision and took on the most challenging responsibility of transforming Dharavi into a modern oasis of dignity. Ratan Tata’s humane vision provided a framework that continues to resonate with our ‘Growth with Goodness’ approach to development.

“Ratan Tata was an ideal renaissance man. With his demise, not only have I lost a mentor and my star, but the nation has also lost one of its most brilliant and humanitarian sons…” Mr Adani wrote.
