The two days Science20 (S20) Summit, a significant international gathering of scientific academies from G20 member and invited Countries and International Organizations, successfully concluded on 22nd July 2023 at Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The two-day summit, chaired by Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Co-Chair S20 and President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), brought together over 100 delegates/participants from G20 member and invited Countries and International Organizations.

Themed on ‘Disruptive Science for Sustainable Development,’ the text of Science-20 Communique consists of subthemes: ‘Clean Energy for Greener Future,’ ‘Universal and Holistic Health,’ and ‘Science for Society and Culture.’ These areas of focus aimed to address crucial challenges and create science-driven solutions to promote sustainable development.

The S20 Summit meeting featured sessions, dedicated to finalizing text of the Science20 Communique. The draft Communique provides policymakers with valuable science-driven recommendations, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among G20 nations. The text of the communique was finalized by all the participating G20 Member and Invited Countries and International Organizations.

Recognizing the role of disruptive science in advancing sustainable development, the S20 affirmed the role of strengthening international cooperation to help achieve clean energy for a green and just future, universal holistic health, and having better pathways for connecting science to society, culture and heritage. It was agreed to establish a Mission Energy Access that aims to greatly accelerate clean energy access efforts across the developing world, thereby ensuring that the ongoing clean energy transition truly leaves no one behind.

It was agreed to initiate a Global Digital Heritage Initiative, which is aimed at preserving global heritage, both tangible and intangible, through the application of digital and cyber-physical technologies. This initiative would represent a paradigm shift to harness the transformative potential of science and technology to both preserve and broaden access to the rich heritage and culture from all G20 countries and other parts of the world.

Establishment of an International Platform on Emerging Disruptive Technologies was also recommended, which would serve as a critical platform to generate and disseminate knowledge to help navigate the interfaces between science, technology, law, and policy.

Under the theme of Universal and Holistic Health, it was agreed that there is an urgent need to focus on well-being and wellness rather than specific dimensions of health. Dissemination of health information and strengthening microbial surveillance and prediction systems, monitoring wildlife, veterinary populations and human communities are all important to enable early detection and prediction of potential pathogens with pandemic potential.

Established in 2017 during Germany’s Presidency, the S20 is an Engagement Group (EG) vertical of G20, comprising the scientific academies of all G20 countries. India, along with Indonesia and Brazil, forms the Troika members during India’s G20 Presidency. The primary objective of the S20 engagement group is to offer science-based advice and recommendations to policymakers, ensuring that decisions are made based on scientific consensus.

India’s G20 Presidency has seen a series of crucial S20 meetings leading up to the S20 Summit in Coimbatore. The journey began with the Inception meeting held in Puducherry on 30-31 January 2023, followed by thematic conferences on ‘Clean Energy for Greener Future’ in Agartala, Tripura on 3-4 April 2023, ‘Universal Holistic Health’ in Lakshadweep on 1-2 May 2023, and ‘Connecting Science to Society & Culture’ in Bhopal on 16-17 June 2023.
