From cancer care to semiconductors: How Ratan Tata helped Assam develop

As the country loses its most beloved icon Ratan Naval Tata, Assam is mourning the loss of a trusted friend who stood by the state in its journey to development.

Ratan Tata has had a long association with Assam, where the Tata Group made an early investment in the tea industry. Recently, he has launched a ground-breaking chip assembly plant that is set to develop Assam as a major semiconductor hub. The ₹27,000 crore facility will be operational by next year.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Ratan Tata played a key role in setting up the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, which will create many job opportunities.

Ratan Tata, who breathed his last on Wednesday night, was reportedly keen to get Assam a semiconductor hub.

Mr Sarma posted on the social media platform, “Shri Ratan Tata ji’s legacy is one of compassion, statesmanship and unshakable belief in India’s growth story. His life is defined by enterprise building and giving back to society. With his demise, the people of Assam have lost one of their greatest well-wishers. Honoured with Assam’s highest civilian award, Mr Tata held a special place in the hearts and minds of the people of Assam.

He took a giant leap of faith for the welfare of Assam.” In 2022, Ratan Tata was conferred with the Assam Baibhav, the state’s highest civilian award.

Cancer care

Ratan Tata also made extraordinary contributions to advancing cancer care in Assam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated seven cancer care facilities in Assam in 2022, which are part of a statewide network to expand affordable cancer treatment to more cities and towns. The multi-tier cancer care model developed by Tata Trusts, set up and operated by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, is a joint initiative of the Government of Assam and Tata Trusts.

Ratan Tata had conceived the project to help Assam fight cancer and was aimed at helping poor patients who cannot afford expensive cancer treatment.

The collaboration between the Assam government and Tata Trusts on cancer care first began in 2017. “He was very passionate about improving healthcare in the state and from his vision we gave birth to the Assam Cancer Care Foundation,” the Chief Minister said.

Mr Sarma said Tata’s demise was a “personal loss”. “Every interaction I had with him made me wiser, most recently when I visited him in Mumbai to thank him for the semiconductor project and for believing in Assam’s capabilities as an industrial base. His simplicity and humility is something I will never forget,” Mr Sarma said.
