US: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman speaks on Free Trade Agreements at PIIE, Washington DC

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday (local time) gave a befitting reply to the negative western ‘perception’ of India at the American think tank Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) located in Washington DC, USA. Here she was discussing the resilience and growth of the Indian economy.

On the revival of the Indian economy after the Corona pandemic, Nirmala Sitharaman said that it is the resilience of the Indian people that they did not let it overwhelm them. People took it as a challenge and came out to do their business despite the tragedies at home.

Denied negative western ‘perception’
Union Finance Minister Sitharaman reacts to negative western ‘perception’ of India, says come to India and see what is happening here, instead of listening to assumptions being made by people who haven’t even gone on the ground and reported Present.

Responding to PIIE President Adam S Posen on perceptions affecting investments or capital inflows into India, Sitharaman said I think the answer lies with the investors who are coming to India, and they have been coming And as someone who is interested in getting investments, all I would say is let’s see what is happening in India, rather than listen to assumptions being made by people who haven’t even been on the ground and prepare reports.

Posen also questioned Sitharaman about the widespread reporting in the Western press about opposition MPs losing their membership and Muslim minorities in India being subjected to violence. The Finance Minister said that India has the second largest Muslim population in the world and this population is still increasing in numbers. If there is a perception or if it is indeed the case that their life is made miserable or made difficult by the support of the government, as is implied in most of these articles. I want to ask is it correct to say about India in this sense when Muslim population is increasing as compared to 1947? On the other hand, the condition of minorities in Pakistan is getting worse and their number is decreasing day by day.

Minorities in Pakistan are accused of minor charges, for which punishment like death penalty is given. The blasphemy law in Pakistan is in most cases used to satisfy personal vendettas. Victims are immediately presumed guilty, even without conducting proper investigation and trial under a jury.

Nirmala Sitharaman said that I would like the World Trade Organization (WTO) to be more progressive, listen to all countries more and be more fair. It has to give space to the voices of countries that have something different to say and not just listen but also pay attention to some extent.
