Shimla, August 16: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has introduced political double standards by blaming the previous BJP government for the financial difficulties of the state while his own party has not fulfilled the promises. During the 2022 assembly elections, the Sukhu-led Congress had promised to provide 300 units of free electricity under its “10 guarantees”. This promise was helpful in gaining the support of voters, yet even after almost two years of its tenure, the Congress government has failed to fulfill this commitment.Congress-menifesto-10-Guarantee

Instead of fulfilling its election promises, the Sukhu administration has put the blame on the previous BJP government, accusing it of financial mismanagement. In his address at the state-level Independence Day function, CM Sukhu criticized the BJP for the decisions that have allegedly led the state to a financial crisis. He highlighted that the BJP’s waiver of electricity and water bills has burdened the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) by Rs 780 crore and the Jal Shakti Department by Rs 300 crore within a year. Sukhu claimed that these steps have been taken for short-term political gains, without considering the long-term financial impact on the state.

Hypocrisy and broken promises

Both observers and critics are pointing to hypocrisy in the Congress government’s narrative. While the financial pressure imposed by the BJP’s policies may be genuine, the Congress’ failure to fulfil its election promises reflects a disturbing pattern of political opportunism. The Congress government’s strategy of deflecting blame instead of addressing its shortcomings has raised serious concerns about its commitment to the welfare of the people of Himachal Pradesh.

Making tall promises to win elections and then passing the buck when those promises are not fulfilled is a recurring theme in politics. This not only erodes public trust, but also the credibility of those in power. The inability to fulfil electoral promises, as well as the practice of scapegoating their predecessors, has led many to question the integrity of political leaders.

The economic consequences of these political moves are severe. Himachal Pradesh is currently grappling with a significant debt crisis, made worse by unfulfilled promises and the ongoing blame game. The burden of these political actions ultimately falls on the public, who have to deal with the resulting financial instability.
