Shimla, 07 September: The BJP has sharply criticized the Congress party for betraying electoral promises through the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojana. The scheme, launched with the promise of providing financial aid to women, is now facing criticism for failing to fulfil its initial guarantees.

BJP media in-charge Karan Nanda accused the Congress of repeatedly making bold promises during election campaigns and later failing to fulfil them. “It has become a pattern for the Congress party to promise the moon during elections and then renege on it after coming to power,” Nanda said.

The controversy started following a statement by Congress minister Dr. Dhani Ram Shandil, who announced that now only one woman per family will get the benefit of Rs 1500 under the scheme. The announcement is quite different from the pre-poll assurances given by prominent Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi, Rajiv Shukla, Bhupesh Baghel, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Mukesh Agnihotri. These leaders had guaranteed that every woman in Himachal Pradesh will get Rs 1500, irrespective of the number of women in the household.

Nanda said that the scheme, aimed at providing assistance to women between the ages of 18 and 60, has received applications from 7,88,784 women in the last 18 months. However, only 28,249 women have actually received the amount so far. Additionally, 2,384 applications were rejected for non-compliance with the eligibility criteria and there have been reports of withdrawal of funds already disbursed.

“The scheme has become a source of disappointment and disillusionment for women rather than a support mechanism,” Nanda alleged. They emphasized that the benefits of the revised scheme are a far cry from the sweeping promises made during the election campaign, leaving many women feeling cheated.

Opposition leaders have also raised similar concerns and accused the Congress government of failing to fulfil its election promises and misleading voters. They argue that the revised structure of the scheme is a clear indication of the failure of the Congress to fulfil its promises, leading to a loss of trust and confidence among beneficiaries.
