Vijayadashami, widely known as Dussehra, marks the conclusion of the Navratri festival and is celebrated with many traditions and rituals across India. This auspicious day marks the victory of good over evil, drawing its significance from the epic Ramayana, especially Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana, who abducted Lord Rama’s wife Sita.

Ravana’s defeat marks the victory of Dharma. The celebrations see the immersion of clay idols of deities such as Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartikeya in water bodies accompanied by music and chants. In many regions, effigies of Ravana are burned amid fireworks, symbolising the destruction of evil.

Vijayadashami is also a precursor to Diwali, the festival of lights, which falls 20 days later. The wishes shared during this time emphasize on wishing a prosperous future and removing obstacles.

The expression of goodwill resonates through various messages, such as:

  • Happy Dussehra! May the burning of the effigy of Ravana free you from all worries.
  • Wishing you happiness and peace this Dussehra!
  • Burn all negativity along with the effigy of Ravana this Dussehra!

Key quotes that reflect the spirit of Dussehra include:

  • Let us celebrate the victory of Dharma over Adharma, truth over deceit and light over darkness.” – Swami Vivekananda
  • “Dussehra reminds us that in the end, truth and Dharma will always triumph.” – APJ Abdul Kalam
  • When family and friends come together to celebrate this festive occasion, the spirit of Dussehra fills hearts with love, joy, and strength. Happy Dussehra to all!
