Devastating cloudburst in Gyabung and Ropa drains in Kinnaur causes heavy damage to local residents, agriculture and infrastructure
Shimla, July 29: A devastating cloudburst at Gyabung and Ropa drains in Kinnaur brought unprecedented rainfall and caused massive damage to infrastructure. The cloudburst has caused massive damage to local residents, agriculture and infrastructure, leading to losses worth crores of rupees.
Heavy rains and subsequent debris flows have badly affected the agriculture of the area. Local residents have reported the destruction of hundreds of apple plants and various cash crops.

In Ropa panchayat, Dharam Singh Mehta’s two-room house was completely washed away in the floods, while Hari Singh’s house was inundated with water and debris. The Jal Shakti Department has reported losses worth crores of rupees due to damage to four irrigation canals.
National Highway-5 remained closed for four hours due to a landslide at Nigulsari block point in Kinnaur. Several rural roads including Ani-Kullu National Highway-305 were also blocked due to heavy rains in Ani subdivision of Kullu district. The National Highways Authority of India and the Public Works Department are working swiftly to restore the blocked roads. Residents of five houses had to be evacuated due to rising water level in Beas river and Sarehi nullah in Kullu district.
Due to bad weather, the Atal Tunnel on the Manali-Leh route is currently closed. Apart from this, flood-like conditions have been created in Palchan of Manali and Karpat Nala of Mayad Valley in Lahaul, affecting the movement of vehicles. A car was damaged due to falling debris in Mehli, Shimla and the Mandi-Pathankot National Highway was blocked for four hours due to a tree falling near Bajgar Khad.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for rain across the state till August 3. Residents have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
