Shimla, July 18: The demand for Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for the employees of Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board has intensified again. Himachal Power Engineers Association has written a letter to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu urging him to take immediate action to implement OPS for the employees of the Electricity Board.

Himachal Power Engineers Association president Lokesh Thakur in his letter to Chief Minister Sukhu stressed that power engineers across the country have been advocating for pension benefits for state employees. Thakur informed that the Himachal Pradesh government has already implemented OPS for various categories of employees, yet the employees of the power board have been excluded from OPS. He said that states like Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand have already provided OPS benefits to their power board employees, which sets an example which Himachal Pradesh should also follow.

Citing the Electricity Act 2003, Thakur pointed out that its provisions do not bar employees from availing OPS benefits. This undermines any opposition to extending the scheme to power sector employees in the state, he argued.

Thakur also pointed out that the central government is planning to amend the NPS to enhance the benefits of employees. However, noting that OPS is already in place in Himachal Pradesh and the incumbent Congress government had promised it, he insisted that it should be made available to power board employees as well.

Despite several assurances by Chief Minister Sukhu, no decisive action has been taken, leading to growing frustration among power board engineers and employees. The association expressed dissatisfaction over the delay, underlining that all other departments in the state have already received OPS benefits.
