Maa Chandraghanta is the third form of Durga. Mother Chandraghanta is seated on a lion in war posture. Mother Chandraghanta has a trident, bow, mace and sword in her hands. On the forehead of Maa Chandraghanta, there is a half moon in the shape of an hourglass, hence she is known as Chandraghanta. Mother was born to kill demons. Know what is the history of Shaktipeeth Maa Naina Devi Temple –
Shaktipeeth Maa Naina Devi Temple is located in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. This temple is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. During the darshan of the famous nine goddesses of North India, the sixth darshan is of Maa Naina Devi. Peepal tree is the main center of attraction in Naina Devi temple. There is an idol of Lord Ganesha and Hanuman on the right side of the main entrance of the temple. After crossing the main gate, there are two lion statues. It is believed that the lion is the vehicle of Mother Goddess.

There are three main idols in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. On the right side is the idol of Mata Kali, in the middle is Naina Devi and on the left is the idol of Lord Ganesha. People come here from far and wide to have darshan of the mother. Mother’s form is also known as Mahishasura Mardini. It is said that the eyes of Sati Mata had fallen on the banks of Naina Lake, after which the temple was built here.

The story of demon Mahishasura is also popular in the name of Naina Devi. It is said that there was a war between the gods and the demons for a hundred years, in which the demon Mahishasura became the king of heaven when the demons won. Mahishasura was a great devotee of Lord Brahma. Once he performed severe penance for Lord Brahma due to which he was pleased and gave a boon to Mahishasura that no man would be able to kill him. Because of the boon, everyone was failing to fight him. The gods started living on earth like ordinary humans. Mahishasura’s atrocities on the earth were increasing. There was an uproar on earth, after which everyone started meditating on the Trinity.

Then Brahmadev, Shivji and Lord Vishnu created a power, which was given by the Himalayas as a lion, Lord Vishnu as a lotus, Indra as a bell and the sea as a garland that never gets dirty. Then all the gods worshiped the Goddess so that the Goddess could be pleased and their sufferings could be relieved.

The goddess was pleased and gave a boon to the gods and said “I will definitely protect you”. With this, the goddess started a war with Mahishasura and after killing him, she became victorious in the war. All the Gods and Goddesses praised the Mother and since then the Mother is also known as Mahishasura Mardini.
