Reversing the Congress narrative about farmers, wrestlers and jawans, former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has said that the opposition party can never do what the BJP has done for these groups. He said that this is the reason why his party is going to win for the third consecutive time in Haryana.

Ahead of the assembly elections in Haryana, the Congress had tried to take advantage of the discontent among farmers over the farm laws and the minimum support price (MSP), discontent among sportspersons over the wrestlers’ protest and discontent among youth over unemployment and the Agniveer scheme for army recruitment.

It had relied on these three issues to oust the BJP from power after 10 years and the strategy seemed to be working even till 9.30 am today, when it was learnt that it was winning more seats than the 46 seats needed for a majority. However, things changed quickly after that and speaking to reporters around 3.30 pm, Khattar attributed the BJP’s win to the work done by the party in the last 10 years. The BJP leader, now a Union minister, was Haryana chief minister till March this year when he was replaced by Nayab Singh Saini. Asked about the three issues raised by the Congress, he said in Hindi, “These were indeed issues. The work we have done for the farmers, jawans and wrestlers of Haryana, the Congress could never have done. The Congress can say whatever it wants, people will like what is right. The Congress did not mislead them. The democracy and people of Haryana are very mature.” Mr Khattar also hit out at the Congress over its claim that the Election Commission was slow in updating Haryana results on its website and said the party was looking for excuses.

On whether Nayab Singh Saini would be the next chief minister, Mr Khattar said, “Our high command and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had clearly announced this. Still, the process is in the hands of the parliamentary board and I think it will continue that way.”

Till 4.02 pm, the tally and results showed that the BJP was leading in 49 seats in Haryana while the Congress was ahead in 36 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address BJP workers at the party headquarters in Delhi this evening.
