Shimla, July 23: In a scathing criticism of the Union Budget 2024-25, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh slammed the financial plan calling it “opportunistic and inequitable” and claimed that it has failed to address the critical developmental needs of the state.

Chief Minister Sukhu expressed disappointment over the Centre’s neglect of the long-standing demands and aspirations of Himachal Pradesh. He lamented the lack of provisions for crucial sectors like road, air and rail connectivity, which he stressed were crucial for the state’s economic growth and infrastructure development.

Sukhu said, “The Union Budget 2024-25 is a lost opportunity for Himachal Pradesh,” stressing that the state government has not received adequate financial support despite repeated appeals. He pointed out that the budget allocated increased funds for some sectors, but it failed to address the specific needs of the state.

Sukhu criticised the budget for failing to provide relief to the state after recent disasters, saying the proposed allocations do not match the scale of the losses. He underlined the urgent need for a special financial package to mitigate the losses caused by the end of GST compensation, which has significantly affected the state’s fiscal sustainability.

The Chief Minister slammed the budget for lack of tax relief measures for the middle class and inadequate support for the agriculture sector. He accused the central government of adopting an “anti-poor” and “non-futuristic” approach, stressing the budget’s failure to encourage inclusive growth and address growing inequalities.

“It is clear that this budget gives priority to political alliances over the welfare of the people,” Sukhu said, criticising what he said were attempts to please political allies at the expense of genuine development concerns.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu called for a budget that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of all citizens, ensuring equitable growth and prosperity for Himachal Pradesh. He urged the Centre to rethink its allocation strategy and prioritise inclusive growth measures that benefit every section of society, especially states like Himachal Pradesh, which face unique geographical and economic challenges.
