A senior Chinese diplomat urged the US at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday to use its influence to pressure Israel to implement UN resolutions to stop its military operation in Gaza.

“We urge the US to show a responsible attitude, use its important influence on the party (Israel) and take concrete measures to press Israel to stop its military operation without delay, as demanded by the Council resolutions, so as to give the long-suffering Palestinian people a chance to live,” China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN Geng Shuang said at a UN Security Council briefing on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestine issue.

“If the US had not intervened on all those occasions, the Council could have passed a resolution demanding a ceasefire soon after the conflict began. If the US had not repeatedly defended one side, many resolutions of this Council would not have been blatantly rejected and disregarded,” Geng said.

Geng said that despite four resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council, orders of the International Court of Justice on interim measures, and enormous efforts by the UN and other humanitarian agencies, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate and violations of international law, especially international humanitarian law, continue unabated.

Geng said a UN convoy supporting an Israeli-approved polio vaccination campaign was forcibly detained for nearly eight hours and six staff of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East were killed in an airstrike last week. He said China strongly condemns such horrific attacks on humanitarian agencies and personnel, which are unacceptable. Speaking about the polio vaccination drive, Geng said it is a clear proof that when parties show political will, it is entirely possible to scale up humanitarian operations in Gaza.

China reiterates its call on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law, including giving priority to life and humanity, immediately lifting the blockade, opening all crossings, lifting restrictions on humanitarian deliveries, stopping attacks on the UN and other humanitarian agencies, and providing safe and unhindered access for those agencies’ operations, the Chinese diplomat said.

“We are now close to the first anniversary of the conflict in Gaza. Over the past year, despite strong joint international calls for a ceasefire and a halt to the killings, Israel has not halted its military operations, which have led to the deaths of more than 41,000 Palestinian civilians,” Geng said.

China supports further action by the UN Security Council to douse the flames of war, mitigate the humanitarian disaster and bring peace to the region as soon as possible.
