China takes racist potshot at India when asked on India’s population
As India on Wednesday surpassed China’s population to become the world’s most populous country, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin took a scathing jibe at New Delhi, saying that while assessing a country’s demographic dividend, not only It is important to look at its size but also the quality.
Responding to media queries on India overtaking China as the world’s most populous country by the middle of this year, the Chinese spokesperson said it is the talent resource that matters most.
“When assessing a country’s demographic dividend, we need to look at not only its size but also its quality. Size matters, but what matters more is the talent resource. Out of 1.4 billion Chinese, about 900 million are of working age and have received an average of 10.9 years of education,” Wang Wenbin said.
Notably, the United Nations World Population Dashboard stated that India now has 1428.6 million people, surpassing the population of China, which currently stands at 1425.7 million. This is the first time since the United Nations began collecting population data in 1950 that India has topped the UN’s list of most populous countries.
The United States ranks third, with an estimated 340 million people.
Wenbin, who also talked about the workforce in China, said the average length of education for recent entrants has increased to 14 years. This is because China has implemented a national strategy to address population aging, including the third-child policy and supportive measures to address demographic changes.
“China has implemented a national strategy to respond to population ageing, including the third-child policy and supportive measures to address demographic changes. As Premier Li Qiang pointed out, China’s demographic dividend is disappearing hasn’t happened, and our talent is in making dividends,” the Chinese spokesperson added.
He further said that the driving force of China’s development remains strong.
A year ago, China’s population shrank for the first time since the 1960s. In 2016, Beijing ended its strict “one-child policy”, which was implemented in the 1980s amid fears of overpopulation, and starts allowing couples to have three children in 2021.
As India last conducted a census in 2011, there are no current, official figures on the exact size of its population.
India’s 10-year census, which was to be held in 2021, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
