Those of you, who don’t regularly follow cricket due to busy schedules, might have recently heard about the Border Gavaskar trophy, which was won by the Indian cricket team at Gabba. If you want to know more about this prestigious tournament and its history then you came to the right place.

Introduction

The Border Gavaskar Trophy is a test cricket series, which is played between India and Australia. It is played by the International Cricket Council future tours program. After every two years.

As of January 2021, India holds the trophy after defeating Australia in 2020 and 2021 by two Tests to one with one Draw match. If a series is drawn, the country holding the trophy returns it. The series is named after distinguished former captains Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar.

Australia will visit India next week for four tests. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy series schedule. This time for the first time Australia will play test cricket at the biggest cricket stadium in the world.

Ahmedabad, the recent and advanced 132000 capacity Stadium named after current Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host the climax of Australia’s first man Test series in India in 6 years. As per reports, the test match in Ahmedabad may be a day-night match with a Pink Ball. The last test at that venue was played under lights in early 2021 when England lost in 2 days to India.

The four-Test series will begin on February 9 in Nagpur, followed by the games in the capital Delhi,  the picturesque Dharamshala and iconic Ahmedabad. The bounded Australian team will undoubtedly want vengeance and give it their all on the field, while India will do everything in its power to protect the Border Gavaskar trophy.

Various Editions of Border Gavaskar Trophy

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 1996-1997

This was the first season of the trophy and just one test was played this season.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 1998-1999

India won this edition too, 2-1. In the first test, India won by 179 runs at Chennai and Tamilnadu.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 1999-2000

In this edition India got Chevrolet wiped out by the Australians as they lost by 3-0 all three test matches of this series were played in Australia contrary to the first two editions of the trophy.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2000-2001

Australia toured India in this series and they lost the series by 2-1. In the first test, the Australian team won by 10 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar scored a half-century in both innings and Gilchrist also scored a century.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2003-2004

This series was drawn as both teams managed to win a match. In total, four test matches were organised. The first test was in gabba, which was drawn.

Border Gavaskar trophy Season 2004-2005

Australia won the series by 2-1. The first test which was held in Bangalore was won by Australians by 217 runs.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2007-2008

Australia again won this series by 2-1. The first test which was held in MCG was won by the Australian team by 337 runs.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2008-2009

The Indians won this series by 2-0. The first test, which was held in Bangalore, was drawn and in that match, Zaheer Khan scored a half-century.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2010-2011

This series was also won by the Indian Cricket Team by 2-0.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2011-2012

In this series, Australia won all four matches against India.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2012-2013

This series was a clean sweep by the Indians by 4-0. The Indians won the first test by 8 wickets. MS Dhoni scored 224 runs in the first inning and was also declared the man of the match.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2014-2015

Australia won this series by 2-0. In the first test of the series the Australian won by a slim margin of 48 runs. Virat Kohli managed to score a century in both innings but his contribution could not help India win the match.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2018-2019

India won the first test which was being held in the oval and won by 31 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara was the hero of this match as he scored 123 runs in the first inning and 71 runs in the second inning.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2020-2021

India again won the series by 2-1. The Australian won the first game by 8 wickets. India was in control of the match but then it put a total of 36 in the second innings and the whole match went out of his hands.
