BJP Wins North East State Elections in 2023

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have emerged as winners in the Assembly elections in Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. In Tripura, the BJP won 33 seats, just two seats above the majority mark, while the Left Congress won 16 seats, and the Tipra Motha won 13 seats. The BJP leadership has reached out to the Tipra Motha, saying it is open to all their demands except the one for ‘Greater Tipraland’. In Nagaland, the BJP and its ally, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), won comfortably by crossing the halfway mark of 31 seats. The NDPP-BJP alliance has won 27 seats, while the Naga People’s Front (NPF) won just two seats.

In Meghalaya, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) emerged as the largest party with 26 seats, just four short of the majority mark of 30. The Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) won five seats each, while the BJP managed to win just three seats. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has sought support from the BJP to form the government. The election results have been seen as a significant setback for the Congress, which was the dominant party in the region until a few years ago.

PM ADDRESS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed party workers at the BJP headquarters during the party’s victory celebrations and thanked the people of the north-east states for the winning mandate. He also congratulated party workers for their efforts and said, “Today’s results show there is full faith in democracy and democratic institutions.”

RESULTS

The turnout was recorded at 75 percent in Nagaland, 84 percent in Tripura, and 70 percent in Meghalaya. The elections were seen as crucial as they could have significant implications for the political balance in the region, especially with the BJP making a concerted effort to expand its presence in the north-east. The BJP had won the Assembly elections in Assam in 2016 and formed the government in Manipur in 2017.
