BJP MP Anurag Singh Thakur sharply criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of being more of a “leader of propaganda” than a “leader of the opposition”
New Delhi, July 31: During the budget discussion of the monsoon session of Parliament, BJP MP Anurag Singh Thakur launched a scathing criticism of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of being more of a “leader of propaganda” than a “leader of the opposition”. Thakur’s speech was a masterclass in political rhetoric, full of sharp attacks, historical references and literary allusions, aimed at debunking Gandhi’s recent statements and the broader opposition narrative.
Thakur’s attack began with a scathing critique of Gandhi’s understanding of Hinduism and the Mahabharata. “Some people are Hindus by chance and their knowledge of the Mahabharata is also by chance,” Thakur remarked, setting the tone for a speech that wove together ancient epics and contemporary politics. He also slammed the opposition for its alleged lack of constitutional knowledge, reminding how they often failed to answer basic questions about the document they pretend to support.
Thakur cleverly cited Shashi Tharoor’s novel, “The Great Indian Novel”, to suggest that Gandhi should seek detailed information from his party member. “If Rahul ji wants detailed information about Mahabharata and Chakravyuh, he can contact his MP,” Thakur quipped. He referred to Tharoor’s allegorical work, which connects the Mahabharata to India’s freedom struggle. Thakur provocatively questioned who was depicted as Dhritarashtra and which party as the Kauravas in Tharoor’s story, indirectly taking a dig at the Congress.
Thakur’s speech did not shy away from historical grievances. He cited the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi and accused the Congress of fostering a culture of deceit and corruption. He listed the Congress’ “seven chakravyuhs”, from the party’s role in the partition of India to various controversial decisions and scandals under different Congress leaders.
Thakur said, “Rahul Gandhi did well by raising the issue of chakravyuh as this country has seen many chakravyuhs of the Congress.” He accused the Congress of dividing the country, mishandling the Kashmir issue, imposing emergency and being involved in many scams including the infamous Bofors scam.
Thakur left no stone unturned in criticising the Gandhi family, referring to them without directly naming them. He accused Rahul Gandhi of doing more damage to the country’s politics and parliamentary traditions than any other leader.
Defending the current government, Thakur said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure has put an end to the Congress’ legacy of corruption and inefficiency, making India the world’s fifth largest economy. Thakur emphasised Modi’s popularity and resilience, saying that despite all the efforts of the Congress, Modi remains deeply embedded in the hearts of the people.
Thakur attacked the Congress over its alleged failures and scams. He questioned who benefited from historic scams like the Jeep scam and the 2G scam and took a dig at Rahul Gandhi’s understanding of political roles. He quipped, “Rahul Gandhi should know that the full form of LOP is Leader of Opposition, not Leader of Propaganda.”
