Shimla, August 31: Shocking information has come to light about the ventilators used for critical patients in Himachal Pradesh. There are ventilators in the state’s medical colleges and various government hospitals, but many of them are out of order. At the same time, a large number of ventilators are not being used due to the lack of technicians and medical officers. There are 914 ventilators in the state. But more than 100 of them are out of order.

The most surprising thing is that 498 ventilators are not functional due to lack of technicians and other reasons. Health and Family Welfare Minister Colonel Dhaniram Shandil said that at present 914 ventilators are available in various government hospitals and medical colleges of the state. He said that 416 of these ventilators are functional. 498 ventilators are not being used and 128 of them are out of order. He said that these ventilators are not being used due to technical fault, lack of technical staff and medical officers and other reasons.

According to the information given by the Health Minister, the maximum number of ventilators (51) are out of order in the medical college located in Nerchowk, Mandi. Whereas, 29 ventilators are out of order in the biggest hospital IGMC located in Shimla. 14 ventilators are out of order in Chamba Medical College, 10 in Hamirpur Medical College, 2 in Palampur Civil Hospital, 1 in Rekongpeo Regional Hospital, 4 in Civil Hospital Rohru, 2 in Zonal Hospital Ripon Shimla, 2 in Kamla Nehru Hospital, 10 in Nahan Medical College, 2 in Civil Hospital Arki and 1 in Regional Hospital Solan.

Apart from this, 51 ventilators are not being used in Hamirpur Medical College due to lack of technical staff. Similarly, 46 ventilators are not being used in Tanda Medical College, 22 in Reckong Peo Hospital, 21 in Regional Hospital Kullu, 60 in Nerchowk Medical College, 21 in Zonal Hospital Ripon, 59 in IGMC, 34 in Nahan Medical College, 16 in Regional Hospital Solan.

Ventilator facility in 66 government hospitals and medical colleges

The Health Minister said that ventilator facility is available in 66 government hospitals (including medical colleges) of the state. There are 914 ventilators in these. There are 119 ventilators in IGMC, 101 in Nerchowk Mandi, 133 in Tanda Medical College, 69 in Hamirpur Medical College and 65 in Chamba Medical College. Apart from this, 56 PSA oxygen plants and two medical oxygen gas plants are available in various hospitals and medical colleges of the state. Out of these, 32 PSA oxygen plants and one medical oxygen gas are functional. While 24 PSA oxygen plants and one medical oxygen gas plant are closed.

Oxygen is produced in PSA oxygen plants based on the need of oxygen for patients admitted in the hospital, because oxygen is not stored after being produced in these plants and one medical oxygen gas plant which is functional in IGMC is producing 150 cum of oxygen per hour.
