Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Cigarette Trade in Mizoram: Contraband Worth Rs 1.05 million Seized
- The Assam Rifles carried out a significant operation and seized around 70 cartons of illicit cigarettes with foreign origins, valued at Rs 1.05 crores, in Tlangsam located in Champhai district of Mizoram. It has been reported that an individual linked to this event was also taken into custody on March 10.
- Just a few days prior to this incident, the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East) oversaw a crackdown operation where 103 bags of illicit areca nuts, valued at Rs 57.68 lakhs, were seized by the Assam Rifles in the vicinity of Hmunhmeltha, Champhai.
- Based on precise information, a joint team of the Customs Department and Assam Rifles conducted the operation. The seized goods were subsequently transferred to the Champhai Customs department for further legal actions, as per the reports.
- Earlier in January this year, the Customs department and Assam Rifles had recovered foreign cigarettes worth Rs 1.57 crore from Mizoram’s Tlangsam village, an official statement said. The joint operations were carried out by a combined team of Assam Rifles and the customs department Champhai based on specific information.
- Another similar event occurred last month, where the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles discovered 77 cases of foreign-made cigarettes, valued at Rs 1.155 crore, near Melbuk Xg at Zokhawthar. This operation was conducted by a team consisting of the Assam Rifles and Customs Department, LCS Zokhawthar, under the guidance of the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), following specific information.
