Explained: Assam-Meghalaya border dispute “Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu have already held several rounds of meetings to resolve the issue. On Wednesday, the Assam cabinet approved the suggestions made by the regional committees comprising senior ministers from both the states,” Baruah said. Assam shares an 804 km long border with Arunachal Pradesh. Although there was no dispute initially, over the years, allegations of encroachment by residents of one state on the land of another state have led to disputes and violence. A case on this issue is pending in the Supreme Court since 1989. In 2021, after urging from both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Shah, the two states resolved to settle their border dispute out of court through talks, people familiar with the matter said. In July last year, both the states signed the Namsai Declaration, agreeing to reduce the number of disputed villages from 123 to 86 and resolve the boundary line by forming 12 committees headed by a cabinet minister visiting the disputed areas . Take feedback from residents and submit reports to their respective governments, he said. The Assam cabinet on Wednesday approved a monthly pension of ₹15,000 to each person from the state jailed during the 21-month Emergency from 1975 to 1977. “In Assam, 301 people were arrested and put behind bars during that time under various provisions like Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). The cabinet today approved ₹15,000 as monthly pension for him. This amount could be the highest for a ‘Loktantra Senani’ (soldier of democracy) in the country,” said Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal. He said that if any of those 301 died, their wives would be given pension. “If the wives also die, the amount will be given to the unmarried daughters of the man.” The cabinet also approved setting up of eight mega industrial projects totaling ₹8,200 crore. Once completed, these industries will provide direct employment to 6100 persons. Minister Baruah said, “Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed with these companies on May 9, a day before the present government completes two years.”
