Shimla, November 16: “The one who makes the way is remembered.” The personality of Himachal Pradesh’s retired IPS Rameshwar Thakur is also something like this, an example of which has been seen recently. On Thursday, Chief of Army Staff Upendra Dwivedi honored Rameshwar Thakur with the “Veteran Achiever Award” in the capital Shimla. A letter of appreciation was also given on behalf of the Army Chief for his remarkable services. This letter was given to recognize the unprecedented contribution made by him with patriotism and dedication even after his retirement.

The Army Chief said in his message, “Former soldier Captain Rameshwar Singh Thakur has made an invaluable contribution to the progress of the country with his meaningful dedication and efficiency, keeping patriotism paramount even after retirement. He has set a unique example for the citizens of the country and other ex-servicemen. I appreciate him for his wonderful contribution.” Captain Rameshwar Singh Thakur called this honour a proud moment for him and said that this award is dedicated to every soldier who works with loyalty and dedication towards the country.

Captain Rameshwar Singh Thakur, IPS (Retd.), who came from a small village in Himachal Pradesh and made a name for himself at the national and international level, is an inspiration. He completed his elementary education from Government High School, Ghanahatti, Shimla and then did his graduation (BA Honors) from Government Boys Degree College, Sanjauli. Currently, he holds the post of Chairman of Himachal Pradesh Public Services Commission. After becoming the Chairman of the Commission, he has made many important reforms towards transparency in recruitments.

Journey from Army to IPS
Captain Thakur passed the Combined Defense Services (CDS) exam and received training at the Chennai-based Officers Training Academy (OTA) and was commissioned in a historical infantry battalion (Outram) in 1986. During his services in the army, he demonstrated his resourcefulness and courage. He received the “Best Strategic Officer” award in the “Young Officers Training Course”. He also did excellent work in anti-insurgency operations in the Kashmir Valley.

After leaving the army in 1991, he served as a security officer in IDBI Bank and then joined the Himachal Pradesh Police Service (HPPS) in 1994. During training, he received awards like Best Indo, Best Outdoor, and All-round Best Officer.

In 2001, Captain Thakur was selected for the Special Protection Group (SPG) of India, where he was responsible for the security of Prime Ministers and former Prime Ministers. During this time he worked with P.V. Narasimha Rao, I.K. Gujral, HD Deve Gowda, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr. Manmohan Singh.

In 2013, he contributed to the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and took strict action against wild crimes. Under his leadership, many notorious criminals were caught and punished. For his outstanding service, he received the “Clark R. Bevin Law Enforcement Award” in Geneva in 2019 and Interpol commendation.

Captain Thakur served in various positions in Himachal Pradesh Police. He was awarded the “Best SP” award by the Election Commission of India for his outstanding work during the 2012 assembly elections. He was also awarded the Police Medal (Meritorious Service) in 2006, the Police Special Duty Medal (SPG) in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal (Distinguished Service) in 2016.

Captain Rameshwar Thakur is an accomplished trainer and has been regularly lecturing at institutions like NPA, CBI Academy, IGNFA and BPR&D. His clean image and professional style took the organization to new heights wherever he served. He is also active in farming and dairy work in his native village located near Shimla Airport. His wife Vijay Thakur is a reputed yoga teacher. Both his sons are in the Indian Air Force. One son is an aviation medical specialist and the other a pilot. The life of Captain Rameshwar Singh Thakur is a symbol of dedication, hard work and honesty, which is an inspiration for every youth.
