Padma Shri Awardee Pandit Som Dutt Battu of Himachal Pradesh has been carrying on the wonderful tradition of Guru-Shishya in the field of classical music and folk songs in the capital Shimla for many decades. Today, by being honored with India’s national level honor Padma Shri, Pandit Som Dutt Battu has not only enhanced the prestige of Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla but also the entire Himachal Pradesh.

In a special conversation with Diary Times correspondent Kumud Sharma, Pandit Som Dutt Battu shared everything openly –

Pandit Som Dutt Battu started learning music from his father Pandit Ram Lal Battu at the age of only six and today even at the age of 87, Pandit Som Dutt Battu is working to promote classical music and folk songs.

Pandit Som Dutt Battu told that He received his complete education in classical music and folk songs from Pandit Kunj Lal Sharma of Gwalior sept of Madhya Pradesh, Prof. Karma Singh Chakraborty of Punjab sept and Kundan Lal Sharma of Patiala sept.

Pandit Som Dutt Battu has also worked to carry forward the tradition of classical music and folk songs in his entire life.

Many disciples of Pandit Som Dutt Battu have today earned their name in the field of classical music and folk songs.

Among the disciples of Pandit Som Dutt Batu, especially the hill folk singing style, Krishna Lal Sehgal and The second disciple is currently the Head of the Music Department of HPU Prof. jeet ram Like many names are included.

Pandit Som Dutt Battu has served as a music teacher for many years in Sanjauli, Kotshera, Fagli colleges of Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. There is always an atmosphere of classical music and folk songs at the house of Pandit Som Dutt Battu.

First in Nabha and then in Hori of Byolia, whenever Pandit Som Dutt Battu stays at home, all his disciples are present.

Till date, Pandit Som Dutt Battu has not taken even a single penny as fee from any disciple in his amazing 70 years of service to classical music and folklore.

Pandit Som Dutt Battu told Diary Times correspondent Kumud Sharma that he has also written many books on classical music and folk songs. Besides, Pandit Som Dutt Battu has presented programs of classical music and folk songs on many national and international platforms on radio in the country and abroad. Have done.

Recently Punjabi University Patiala has published a wonderful book on classical music written by Pandit Som Dutt Battu.

Today, even at the age of 87, Pandit Som Dutt Battu continues to serve classical music and folk songs.

Wherever Pandit Som Dutt Battu is respectfully invited, Pandit Som Dutt Battu goes and renders his services of classical music and folk songs. Pandit Som Dutt Battu’s Riyaaz continues even today at the age of 87.

Hurt by the experiments being done in folk music and the compromise with tradition, Pandit Som Dutt Battu expressed his deep concern over the compromise being made with tradition in folk songs, the changes in tunes, the style of writing songs and the commercialization dominating folk songs.

Pandit Som Dutt Battu has said that traditional folk songs also give us our identity and if there is true devotion, passion and love for our culture, then the melodious songs written and sung in the traditional style can also take you to the pinnacle of success.

Giving a message to the new folk singers, Pandit Som Dutt Battu said that if music is practiced with true passion then the traditional qualities of folk songs should be maintained and all the new folk song singers will definitely get success automatically.

Pandit Som Dutt Battu said that my entire life was spent in classical music and folk songs –
