Aditya L1 Mission : Led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) the Aditya L1 mission is an ambitious space endeavour to study the Sun, particularly its outermost layer called the corona. To enhance our understanding of the Sun’s dynamics, the origin of solar winds, and their impact on space weather, Aditya-L1 has been made.

Aditya L1 Mission Objectives

The primary objectives of the Aditya L1 mission are:

– Study the dynamic functions of the Sun’s outermost layer, the corona.

– Investigate the mechanisms responsible for the origin and acceleration of solar winds.

– Analyze the composition of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and their effects on space weather.

– Monitor and predict space weather events that can impact satellite operations, communication systems, and power grids on Earth.

Launch and Orbit

Aditya L1 is set to be launched on 2nd September, at 11:50 a.m. at Sriharikota.

Aditya L1 is planned to be launched as a satellite into a halo orbit around the first Lagrange point (L1), which is a gravitationally stable point between the Earth and the Sun. This point could provide an unobstructed view of the Sun. This allows the spacecraft to maintain a relatively fixed position concerning Earth’s position in its orbit.

As per their recent post on their Twitter account, Aditya-L1 will stay at a distance of 1.5 million km away from Earth. The same has been directed towards the Sun, which is 1% of the Sun-Earth distance.

The Twitter account has also noted that Aditya-L1 will neither land on the Sun nor go near the Sun.

Payload and Instruments

Some of the key instruments onboard Aditya L1 include:

•              Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC): VELC will capture images of the solar corona in different wavelengths to study its dynamics and temperature variations.

•              Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT): SUIT will provide high-resolution images of the Sun’s chromosphere and corona in the ultraviolet range.

•              Aditya Solar Wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX): This instrument will measure the variation in the velocity and abundance of solar wind particles.

•              Plasma Analyser Package for Aditya (PAPA): PAPA will study the properties of solar wind and its composition.

Science Significance

The Aditya L1 mission by ISRO has several scientific objectives aimed at studying the Sun and its outermost layer, the corona. These objectives include:

1.            Understanding the Sun’s Outermost Layer (Corona): Aditya L1 seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Sun’s outermost layer, the corona. This layer is much hotter than the Sun’s surface (photosphere) and plays a crucial role in various solar activities and space weather phenomena.

2.            Studying Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs): The mission aims to investigate the dynamics of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). CMEs are massive bursts of solar wind and magnetic fields that can disrupt satellite operations, communication systems, and power grids on Earth. 3.            Examining Solar Winds: Aditya L1 will analyze the origin and acceleration of solar winds. Solar winds are streams of charged particles (plasma) that flow from the Sun into space.  This study is crucial for understanding their impact on the Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere.

4.            Observing the Sun’s Chromosphere:  The mission will provide high-resolution images of the Sun’s chromosphere, which is the region just above the photosphere. This will help scientists study the temperature and dynamics of this important layer.

5.            Measuring Ultraviolet Radiation:  Aditya L1 will measure ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. These will help scientists understand the Sun’s emission processes and how they relate to the Sun’s magnetic activity.

6.            Monitoring the Solar Magnetic Field: To study the Sun’s magnetic field, including its strength and changes over time. This is critical for understanding solar magnetic phenomena and their influence on space weather.

7.            Enhancing Space Weather Prediction: One of the practical goals of the Aditya L1 mission is to improve space weather prediction capabilities. For forecasting space weather events and their effects on Earth and its technological infrastructure.

8.            Advancing Solar Physics: The mission adds to propelling the field of physics by giving significant information and bits of knowledge into the Sun’s way of behaving, attractive cycles, and different peculiarities happening in its external layers.

In short, the scientific objectives of the Aditya L1 mission are primarily focused on deepening our understanding of the Sun’s corona. Its magnetic processes, and its influence on space weather.
