Shimla, Aug 27: The Himachal Pradesh government today announced that a committee will be set up under the leadership of the concerned Deputy Commissioner to sort out the problems faced by the people of Dharampur Assembly constituency following the recent heavy rains on the Sundernagar to Manali National Highway (NH-3).

Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh made this statement in the state assembly while highlighting the challenges posed by the heavy rains. He expressed concern over the inaction on the part of the Centre, particularly hitting out at Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut, who did not raise the issue before the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in Parliament. Singh accused the MP of being more preoccupied with unrelated matters rather than addressing the dire situation in her constituency.

The minister informed the assembly that he had earlier discussed similar concerns raised by Congress member Chandershekhar, and assured that he had spoken to the contractors and the NHAI about the shoddy work and material used in the highway construction. The minister blamed poor quality of construction for the extensive damage to highways and link roads this year, which got worse due to heavy rainfall.

Singh further said that 55 houses near the highway have become unsafe, of which 48 have been marked for relocation to safer areas. The affected families have been provided with tarpaulin sheets and blankets to aid their temporary rehabilitation. He stressed that the matter requires the immediate attention of the Government of India.

The Deputy Commissioners of Kullu, Mandi and Bilaspur have been directed to take up the issue with the NHAI. The committee, once constituted, will comprise officials from the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) department and other related departments, whose findings will be presented in the ongoing assembly session.

Earlier, Congress member Chandershekhar criticized the construction company Gawar for the poor condition of houses and roads, forcing buses to take a 45-km detour via Sarkaghat.
