US: One dies in parking garage collapse in lower Manhattan

A parking garage in Manhattan, US, collapsed on Tuesday, killing one worker, injuring five and damaging several cars. One worker was trapped on the top floor and was rescued from an adjacent terrace, officials said.

 

A viral video showed cars dangling from an upper deck of the three-storey building and bystanders also spoke of a terrifying rumble followed by screams. Liam Gaeta, a student at nearby Pace University, said it felt like an earthquake. Other students spoke of seeing cars falling into the building.

The garage caved in around 4 p.m., a few blocks from City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge and about a half mile (0.8 km) from the New York Stock Exchange. Mayor Eric Adams told the media that the collapse made the building completely unstable.

John Esposito, the fire department’s chief of operations, said the danger caused firefighters to pull out, instead conducting a search with a drone and a robotic dog.
