India to host its third G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar between May 22 and 24, 2023. The G20 summit in Srinagar will be Jammu and Kashmir’s first significant international event since August 2019, when the state was split into the two UTs of JK and Ladakh, and its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution was revoked. Keeping the weather in mind, the months April-June have been shortlisted for Srinagar and Leh when the region is at its scenic best.

Preparation Related to G20

The main venue to host G20 meetings is the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre SKICC, which is situated on the banks of Dal Lake. The venue is being given a makeover of Rs. 7. 5 crore, which includes the upgradation of digital infrastructure and refurbishing of the interior and exterior.

The preparation related to the upcoming meeting is in its final stage and various arrangements related to multi-tier security and traffic diversions are also being worked out. While deliberations during the three-day event will be held in Srinagar, the foreign delegates will also be taken on a sightseeing tour to Baramulla, Dachigam National Park, and also to the ski resort of Gulmarg. Additionally, the road to Gulmarg from Srinagar, the Narbal-Gulmarg stretch is being given a new look, and the Nehru Guest House along with other huts in Chashmeshahi are being revamped.

The UT administration has also set up a special medical task force, including advanced life support mobile ambulances at the venues and excursion sites.

Tourism Benefit due to G20

Now it is the time to counter all the negativity prevailing around the world and create an opportunity for international branding of the UT.

Reportedly, Srinagar had nearly two million tourists visiting the valley in the year 2022, with all of them either staying in Srinagar or passing through it.

It is also being seen as an opportunity for India to refute Pakistan’s fake claim of human rights violation in the Kashmir Valley.

The G20 meeting will eventually result in an increase in tourist visits, enhancing economic benefits and generation of employment for the localities, and will make it a stable destination for investments.
