Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday unveiled the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), marking a significant step towards strengthening sporting ties between the two nations.

The initiative aims to expand cooperation beyond cricket by promoting collaboration in sports science, athlete development, coaching, technology, and sports infrastructure. It reflects the growing importance of sports as a key pillar of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The event was attended by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan and Australian cricket legends Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar, highlighting the strong sporting and cultural connection shared by both countries.

Sharing his experience on X, Prime Minister Modi described the visit to the MCG as a memorable moment and said that the love for sports continues to bring the people of India and Australia closer.

Addressing the gathering at one of the world’s most famous cricket stadiums, PM Modi said the Melbourne Cricket Ground holds a special place in the hearts of Indians because of the unforgettable cricketing moments between the two countries.

“Cricket is not just a game but a shared passion,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the occasion celebrated friendship rather than sporting rivalry.

Sports Partnership to Go Beyond Cricket

While launching the roadmap, PM Modi emphasized that India and Australia will deepen collaboration not only in cricket but also across multiple sporting disciplines.

He said both countries will work together in areas such as sports training, sports science, innovation and technology, creating stronger partnerships both on and off the field.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s efforts to make sports more accessible through the Khelo India Programme, which has helped talented athletes from villages, small towns and ordinary families pursue their sporting dreams.

According to Modi, India’s sporting ecosystem is rapidly expanding, with promising athletes now emerging from every corner of the country rather than just major cities.

Focus on Future Global Sporting Events

Looking ahead, PM Modi pointed to the opportunities for greater cooperation as both countries prepare to host major international sporting events.

India is scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is also bidding to host the 2036 Olympic Games, while Brisbane will welcome the 2032 Olympic Games.

He said these global events would require world-class sports infrastructure and create new opportunities for India and Australia to exchange knowledge, share expertise and strengthen long-term collaboration.

A New Chapter in India-Australia Relations

The launch of the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap came during Prime Minister Modi’s three-day official visit to Australia and reflects the shared commitment of both governments to expand cooperation beyond traditional sectors.

The roadmap is expected to promote institutional partnerships, improve coaching standards, encourage technical exchanges and support the overall growth of sports in both countries, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.
