Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome in Jakarta on Tuesday as he began his official state visit to Indonesia, marking an important step towards strengthening bilateral relations and expanding strategic cooperation between the two countries.
PM Modi arrived in Indonesia as part of his three-nation diplomatic tour and was welcomed with full state honours. His aircraft was escorted by Indonesian Air Force fighter jets upon entering Indonesian airspace, highlighting the significance of the visit. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally received the Prime Minister at the airport, where a traditional cultural dance performance was also organised in his honour.
The visit, taking place from July 6 to July 8, comes at the invitation of President Prabowo and marks PM Modi’s fourth visit to Indonesia. It is also the first bilateral visit between the two nations since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.
Focus on Defence and Maritime Cooperation
India and Indonesia have steadily expanded cooperation in defence and maritime security over the past few years. Regular military exercises, defence exchanges, industry collaboration, and Indonesia’s acquisition of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles have further strengthened security ties.
The discussions during PM Modi’s visit are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation under India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) vision, which promotes regional stability, maritime security, and inclusive growth across the Indo-Pacific.
In his departure statement, PM Modi said the visit would contribute to strengthening India’s Act East Policy and reinforce the country’s commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
“My visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand will further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, and our outlook towards a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the Prime Minister stated.
Expanding Trade and Economic Partnership
Economic cooperation is expected to remain a key pillar of the discussions. Indonesia is currently India’s second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching USD 24.78 billion during the 2025–26 fiscal year.
More than 130 Indian companies have established investments across various sectors in Indonesia, including infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, and technology.
Critical minerals are also likely to feature prominently in bilateral talks. Indonesia possesses nearly 21 percent of global nickel reserves and remains a leading producer of bauxite, copper, and tin, making it an important partner for India’s renewable energy ambitions and long-term supply chain strategy.
Engagement with Indian Diaspora
During his stay, PM Modi is expected to interact with members of the Indian diaspora living in Indonesia. He is also scheduled to visit the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta along with President Prabowo, reflecting the deep historical and cultural connections shared by both nations.
Following his engagements in Indonesia, PM Modi will travel to Australia and New Zealand as part of his broader diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening India’s partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.
