In a major boost to Himachal Pradesh’s horticulture sector, the state has successfully exported its first-ever consignment of cherries and plums to Oman, marking a significant step towards expanding the global footprint of its premium stone fruits.

The export initiative is expected to pave the way for new international markets and offer better returns to fruit growers across the hill state.

Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi flagged off the inaugural shipment from Chandigarh Airport on Saturday. The consignment included 400 kilograms of cherries and 400 kilograms of plums, transported through air cargo to Oman.

The fruits were cultivated by six progressive orchardists from the Jadol-Tikkar and Bagi regions of Shimla district, areas known for producing high-quality temperate fruits.

Calling the export a landmark achievement, Minister Negi said the initiative would help orchardists secure more competitive prices by gaining access to overseas buyers.

“This is just the beginning. The Middle East and Gulf nations are emerging as promising destinations for Himachal Pradesh’s horticultural produce. In the coming years, we will also explore export opportunities for apples and other fruits,” he said.

The minister encouraged growers to focus on premium-quality fruit varieties that meet international standards, enabling Himachal’s produce to establish a strong identity in global markets.

Negi also reaffirmed the commitment of the Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation (HPMC) towards supporting orchardists through market expansion and export-oriented initiatives.

Industry experts believe the development could significantly enhance farmers’ incomes while strengthening Himachal Pradesh’s position as an emerging player in the global fruit export industry.

With increasing demand for fresh and high-quality produce in Gulf countries, the successful shipment to Oman is being viewed as a promising beginning for the state’s long-term horticultural export strategy.
