The decision was reached during the first round of high-level negotiations held under the June 18 Islamabad Memorandum at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland. Mediators Qatar and Pakistan described the discussions as “encouraging” and confirmed the creation of several mechanisms designed to maintain peace and push negotiations towards a lasting settlement.
High-Level Committee Formed to Lead Peace Process
As part of the latest understanding, both countries have established a high-level political committee that will oversee the mediation process and supervise specialized groups working on key issues, including nuclear concerns, sanctions, monitoring, and dispute resolution.
The committee has approved a 60-day diplomatic roadmap, allowing technical-level negotiations to begin immediately. These discussions are expected to continue throughout the week as experts from both sides work on unresolved matters.
New Strait of Hormuz Communication Channel to Prevent Escalation
One of the most important outcomes of the talks was the decision to establish a direct communication channel to prevent misunderstandings and accidental confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route responsible for a major portion of global oil transportation.
The mechanism is expected to improve maritime security and ensure uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels through the critical energy corridor.
Lebanon Ceasefire Mechanism Becomes First Major Test
The negotiations also resulted in the creation of a Lebanon de-confliction cell involving the US, Iran, and Lebanon, with Qatar and Pakistan serving as facilitators. The mechanism will monitor adherence to the cessation of hostilities outlined under the Islamabad Memorandum.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the development as a major achievement and called the Lebanon mechanism the “first real test” of the fragile peace process.
Iran Reports Progress on Sanctions and Economic Relief
According to Araghchi, diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan and Qatar have already produced important outcomes. He stated that restrictions on Iranian oil and petrochemical exports have been removed, some frozen Iranian assets have been released, and a broader reconstruction and economic development initiative has been launched.
Diplomacy Gains Momentum as Technical Talks Continue
In a joint statement, Qatar and Pakistan reaffirmed their commitment to keeping diplomatic efforts alive and thanked both Washington and Tehran for continuing to choose dialogue over conflict.
Chief negotiators from both sides will regularly update the high-level committee while specialized working groups continue discussions on nuclear matters, sanctions, and implementation procedures.
The latest negotiations represent the most structured diplomatic framework established since the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum on June 18. The coming 60 days are now expected to be crucial in determining whether the temporary understandings can transform into a long-term agreement between the United States and Iran.
