The picturesque hill town of Palampur, known for its scenic beauty and growing tourism appeal, is grappling with a worsening traffic crisis. What was once an occasional inconvenience has now become a daily challenge for residents, commuters and local businesses as major roads remain clogged for hours due to increasing vehicles, poor parking management and a surge in tourist traffic.

Traffic congestion has become a regular scene across key locations including Main Bazaar, Ghuggar Road, Hospital Road, the Palampur-Dharamshala Road and the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway that passes through the town. Residents claim that ineffective traffic regulation and the absence of strict action against illegal roadside parking have contributed significantly to the problem.

Roadside Parking Emerges as the Biggest Cause of Congestion

According to local residents, cars, taxis and commercial vehicles are frequently parked along narrow roads, leaving limited space for smooth movement of traffic. The lack of proper monitoring and enforcement of parking rules has resulted in frequent bottlenecks, especially during busy hours.

Many residents believe that stronger traffic management measures and stricter action against indiscriminate roadside parking are urgently needed to restore order on Palampur’s roads.

Weekend Tourist Rush Makes the Situation Worse

The traffic situation becomes more severe during weekends when thousands of tourists travel to Palampur and nearby attractions. As a gateway to several popular destinations in Himachal Pradesh, the town witnesses a significant increase in vehicle movement every Saturday and Sunday.

During peak hours, long queues of vehicles can be seen on major roads, causing delays for commuters. Emergency services, including ambulances, also face difficulties navigating through heavily congested routes, raising concerns over public safety.

Lack of Parking Infrastructure Adds to the Challenge

Another major issue highlighted by residents is the shortage of dedicated parking facilities. Despite a substantial rise in the number of vehicles over the years, Palampur still lacks a large public parking space capable of handling the growing demand.

Due to the limited availability of organised parking areas, many vehicle owners are left with no option but to park along the roadside, further reducing road space and intensifying congestion.

Administration Plans New Traffic Management Strategy

Responding to the concerns of residents, Palampur SDM Dr OP Yadav stated that discussions with local residents, traders’ associations, non-governmental organisations and media representatives would begin next week to prepare a comprehensive traffic management plan.

The proposed strategy aims to improve vehicle movement, strengthen traffic regulation and provide a long-term solution to the recurring traffic jams affecting the town.

Growing Demand for Immediate Action

With traffic jams becoming a part of everyday life, residents and traders are urging the district administration, Municipal Corporation and police authorities to take swift and effective steps. Experts believe that better parking facilities, strict enforcement of traffic rules and improved planning will be essential to preserve Palampur’s smooth mobility as tourism and urban growth continue to expand.
