Former Union Minister and BJP leader Anurag Thakur has strongly criticized the prolonged delay in shifting Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College to its newly constructed campus in the Nadaun Assembly constituency. The state-of-the-art facility, built at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore, has reportedly been ready for nearly two years but is yet to become fully operational.

During his visit to the campus, Thakur questioned why the institution had not been shifted despite the completion of infrastructure and facilities. He said the people of Himachal Pradesh deserve a clear explanation regarding the reasons behind the delay.

“Public Has a Right to Know”

Addressing the issue, Thakur stated that securing approval and funding for the ambitious project from the Central Government required significant effort. According to him, the continued inaction in making the campus functional has raised serious concerns among residents and stakeholders.

“The public has a right to know who is responsible for the delay. A project of this scale was envisioned to improve healthcare and medical education, but it remains underutilized despite being completed,” he said.

600 Students Yet to Benefit From New Infrastructure

Thakur pointed out that regular academic activities for around 600 medical students have not started at the new campus. He also highlighted that outpatient department (OPD) services are yet to be launched from the facility, preventing local residents from accessing healthcare services that were expected to become available after the campus was completed.

The BJP leader questioned what factors were preventing the administration from beginning operations when the necessary infrastructure was already in place.

Political Blame Over Project Delays

Recalling the history of the project, Thakur said the foundation stone for the medical college campus was laid in 2017. He alleged that initial progress was affected due to delays in land availability during the previous Congress government.

He further claimed that Congress-led administrations have repeatedly slowed down the project’s progress, resulting in a situation where a fully developed campus remains unused even after completion.

Demand for Immediate Action

Thakur emphasized that the delay has deprived residents of better healthcare facilities and modern medical education infrastructure. He urged the state government to provide a detailed explanation and take immediate steps to operationalize the campus.

The issue has sparked fresh debate over infrastructure utilization and healthcare development in Himachal Pradesh, with many local residents now seeking answers about when the long-awaited medical college campus will finally begin serving students and patients.
