A relentless spell of extreme heat has intensified the forest fire crisis in Kasauli, with temperatures climbing to 32°C and multiple wildfire incidents reported across the region. The latest blaze erupted near the Mandodhar forest area along the Dharampur-Mangoti Mor road during the early hours of Wednesday, creating panic among residents and nearby hospitality establishments.
According to officials, the Parwanoo Fire Department received an emergency alert at around 3:32 am. Firefighters immediately rushed to the spot and launched an intensive operation to contain the rapidly spreading flames. The firefighting effort continued for nearly six hours before the blaze was finally brought under control.
Authorities said the fire spread quickly due to a thick layer of dry pine needles covering the forest floor. These pine needles, rich in resin, become highly combustible during hot and dry weather conditions, significantly increasing the risk of wildfires. Even a small spark, often caused by careless human activity, can trigger a large-scale forest fire within minutes.
The incident caused widespread concern among local residents and staff members of nearby hotels and tourism units as massive clouds of smoke engulfed the hillside. Many establishments in the area depend on private water tankers and borewells for their daily water requirements, leaving limited resources available to support firefighting operations during emergencies.
Santosh Sharma, Commandant of Home Guards in Solan, confirmed that the fire near Mandodhar forest had been successfully contained by the Parwanoo firefighting team. However, he cautioned that the threat remains far from over.
Later in the evening, another forest fire was reported from the Basal forest area in Solan district. A separate firefighting team was deployed to tackle the new blaze, with smoke still visible from several kilometers away as operations continued.
The recurring forest fires have raised fresh concerns about environmental damage, public safety, and the growing impact of heatwave conditions across Himachal Pradesh. Officials have urged residents, tourists, and commuters to avoid activities that could accidentally ignite fires, including discarding cigarette butts or leaving behind burning materials in forested areas.
With temperatures expected to remain high in the coming days, authorities remain on high alert as firefighting teams continue monitoring vulnerable forest zones across the region.
