Around 30 Indian nationals have been arrested in the United States for allegedly living in the country illegally and working as commercial truck drivers, according to US federal authorities. Officials confirmed that the individuals are now facing deportation proceedings following a major immigration enforcement operation.
The arrests were carried out during “Operation Checkmate,” a federal initiative aimed at identifying undocumented individuals operating commercial vehicles on American roads. The operation was conducted by agents from the US Border Patrol’s Yuma Sector in Arizona between May 11 and May 15.
According to a statement released by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), authorities arrested a total of 52 people found to be in the country illegally. Among them, 36 individuals were working as semi-truck drivers.
Officials said that 30 of those truck drivers were Indian nationals, while the remaining six were from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia.
Drivers Held Commercial Licenses, Some Had No License
Investigators found that several of the arrested drivers possessed commercial driver’s licenses issued by various US states, including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia. However, some individuals reportedly had no valid driver’s license at all.
Authorities also stated that many of the drivers were carrying employment authorization documents that had been issued during the previous administration but were no longer valid at the time of the operation.
Federal officials confirmed that all individuals were processed under US immigration laws and will be deported.
Public Safety Concerns Behind the Operation
US authorities described Operation Checkmate as part of a broader effort to improve road safety and enforce immigration regulations involving commercial vehicle operators.
“Operation Checkmate reflects our commitment to safeguarding communities and roads from unlawfully present drivers who pose significant risks to public safety,” said Dustin Caudle, Acting Chief Patrol Agent for the Yuma Sector.
He added that federal agents continue to monitor highways and transportation routes to prevent accidents involving unqualified or unauthorized commercial drivers.
Trump Administration Tightens Rules for Foreign Commercial Drivers
The arrests come amid stricter enforcement measures introduced under President Donald Trump’s administration. Earlier, the US Department of Transportation announced steps to prevent unqualified foreign nationals from obtaining commercial licenses for operating trucks and buses.
The issue has gained increased attention in recent months following several high-profile accidents involving commercial vehicles. In some cases, Indian-origin truck drivers were arrested and charged in connection with fatal crashes, prompting renewed scrutiny of licensing and immigration compliance within the trucking industry.
Growing Focus on Immigration Enforcement
The latest arrests highlight the US government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement and ensure that commercial vehicle operators meet federal safety and legal requirements.
As deportation proceedings move forward, the case is expected to draw attention from both immigration advocates and transportation industry stakeholders, particularly regarding employment authorization, licensing standards, and road safety regulations in the United States.
