Voting for the Himachal Pradesh Urban Local Body Elections 2026 began peacefully on Sunday morning across 51 urban local bodies, including the four key Municipal Corporations of Dharamsala, Solan, Mandi, and Palampur. Early trends showed steady voter participation, with residents arriving at polling booths since morning to cast their votes.
According to official updates, Dharamsala Municipal Corporation recorded a voter turnout of 12.2 per cent till 9 AM, while Solan Municipal Corporation registered 14.13 per cent voting during the first two hours of polling. Authorities reported smooth polling arrangements and visible enthusiasm among voters across several wards.
In Solan district, the five civic bodies of Solan, Parwanoo, Nalagarh, Arki, and Kandaghat collectively recorded a voter turnout of 15.95 per cent in the initial phase of voting. Long queues were seen outside multiple polling stations as citizens stepped out early to participate in the democratic process.
A total of 1,147 candidates are contesting for 449 posts in these civic elections. The election is considered crucial for local governance and urban development in the state.
More Than 3.6 Lakh Voters Eligible
The Himachal Pradesh civic elections have drawn participation from a large voter base. According to election officials, 3,60,859 voters are eligible to cast their votes this year. This includes:
- 1,80,963 male voters
- 1,79,882 female voters
- 14 third-gender voters
Notably, the voter list also includes 1,808 first-time voters, reflecting growing youth participation in local elections. Among them are 961 male and 847 female first-time voters.
Counting Schedule for Himachal Civic Polls
Election authorities confirmed that the counting of votes for municipal councils and nagar panchayats will take place on Sunday itself. However, the counting and final results for the four Municipal Corporations — Dharamsala, Solan, Mandi, and Palampur — will be declared on May 31.
The civic body elections are being closely watched as they are expected to shape urban governance, infrastructure planning, sanitation projects, and public development priorities across Himachal Pradesh.
