Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu intensified the Congress campaign for the upcoming Palampur Municipal Corporation elections on Thursday, calling on residents to ensure a clean sweep for the party across all 15 wards.
Addressing a massive public gathering at Gandhi Ground in Palampur, the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister said that a strong Congress mandate would help accelerate urban development and improve civic infrastructure in the town. He stated that the state government was focused on upgrading roads, drinking water schemes, sanitation systems and other essential public services across urban areas of the state.
Sukhu claimed that Palampur had witnessed steady development under Congress leadership and assured people that several new public welfare and infrastructure projects would soon be launched in the region.
Sukhu Attacks BJP, Accuses Centre of Ignoring Himachal Pradesh
During his speech, Sukhu launched a sharp political attack on the BJP and the Narendra Modi-led Central Government. He alleged that Congress-ruled states were facing “step-motherly treatment” from the Centre.
The Chief Minister claimed that the Central Government had stopped the Revenue Deficit Grant to Himachal Pradesh, putting additional financial pressure on the state. He also accused the Centre of not providing adequate financial support for the rehabilitation of families affected by recent floods in the hill state.
Referring to disaster relief measures introduced by his government, Sukhu said compensation for fully damaged houses had been increased from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh after changes were made to the relief manual. According to him, Himachal Pradesh became the first state in the country to provide such enhanced compensation for disaster-hit families.
Congress vs BJP Narrative Intensifies Ahead of Civic Polls
The Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister further alleged that the previous BJP government led by Jai Ram Thakur had left behind a debt burden of nearly Rs 78,000 crore.
Before addressing the public meeting, Sukhu participated in a roadshow alongside senior Congress leaders and party workers in support of Congress candidates contesting the Palampur Municipal Corporation elections.
The Palampur civic polls are being seen as an important political contest in Himachal Pradesh, with both Congress and BJP trying to strengthen their hold in urban local bodies ahead of future elections.
