In a major infrastructure boost for Himachal Pradesh, the state government has approved the long-awaited Baijnath–Paprola bypass project in Kangra district. The ₹28 crore initiative is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve daily commuting for thousands of residents and travelers.
The announcement has brought relief to locals who have long struggled with heavy traffic in the busy market areas of Baijnath and Paprola. These towns, located along the Pathankot–Mandi National Highway, often face severe traffic jams due to increasing vehicular movement, narrow roads, and roadside parking.
Speaking to the media, MLA Kishori Lal confirmed that the Public Works Department (PWD) has already initiated the land acquisition process — a crucial first step toward turning the project into reality. Officials have also finalized the alignment plan and technical roadmap, ensuring smooth execution without unnecessary delays.
According to project details, the proposed bypass will stretch approximately 9 kilometers. It will begin near the Tashi Jong area, about 2 kilometers before Paprola, and pass through hilly terrain before reconnecting with the main highway beyond the congested zones. To tackle geographical challenges and ensure uninterrupted connectivity, the project will include the construction of two bridges.
The current road stretch frequently experiences traffic bottlenecks, especially during peak hours, as local, commercial, and long-distance vehicles converge in the same area. Over time, the situation has worsened, impacting not only travel time but also road safety.
Residents and local business owners have welcomed the decision, calling it a “long overdue development.” Many believe that once completed, the bypass will reduce accident risks, improve traffic flow, and create a more organized urban environment.
Beyond easing congestion, the project is also expected to provide an economic boost. Smoother transportation can enhance trade efficiency and make the region more attractive to tourists, benefiting local businesses.
PWD officials stated that with administrative approval and budget allocation already in place, groundwork has begun in earnest. Efforts are now focused on accelerating land acquisition so that construction can proceed within the planned timeline, with minimal disruption to the public.
As Kangra continues to grow as a key hub in Himachal Pradesh, projects like the Baijnath–Paprola bypass highlight the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
