Jai Ram Thakur Slams Himachal Pradesh Govt Over Sarkaghat Murder, Raises Law & Order Concerns

In a sharp attack on the Himachal Pradesh government, former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Friday raised serious concerns over the state’s law and order situation following the shocking murder of a 19-year-old girl in Sarkaghat.

Speaking to the media during a BJP event, Thakur expressed deep anguish over the brutal killing of Siya Guleria, allegedly by a drug addict. He questioned the government’s response, stating that neither the Chief Minister nor any senior minister had reached out to the victim’s family.

“A young girl was mercilessly killed, yet the government remains silent. Instead of focusing on public safety, crores are being spent on events like marathons and walkathons,” Thakur said.

He demanded a thorough and time-bound investigation into the incident, calling it a reflection of deteriorating law and order in the state.

Push for Women’s Empowerment Law

Addressing a gathering at Dev Sadan, Thakur also spoke about the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, calling it a historic reform in India’s democratic framework. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring the passage of the bill in both Houses of Parliament in 2023.

According to Thakur, the Act—aimed at providing 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies—is a step toward genuine empowerment.

“This is not a favour to women, but their constitutional right,” he emphasized.

Call for Political Cooperation

Thakur urged all political parties to support the implementation of the law, especially during the special parliamentary session scheduled between the 16th and 18th of this month.

He also criticized certain opposition parties for allegedly creating obstacles in executing the legislation, despite earlier supporting it.

“When the bill was passed, many demanded quick implementation. Now, unnecessary hurdles are being created,” he remarked.

Women at the Center of Development

Highlighting the broader impact of the policy, Thakur said increasing women’s participation in governance would reshape India’s development model.

He pointed to the growing presence of women in leadership roles—from the President’s office to the Union Cabinet—as evidence of a shift toward inclusive governance.

“When half the population gets leadership opportunities, the entire development paradigm changes,” he added.
