Tensions in the Middle East have escalated once again as the European Union (EU) strongly criticized Israel’s decision to approve more than 30 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling the move “illegal” and deeply concerning for future peace efforts.

In an official statement released on Friday, the EU described the expansion as a “flagrant violation of international law”, warning that such actions could severely damage the already fragile prospects of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

The statement emphasized that expanding settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, goes against international legal standards. It also referenced the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion of July 19, 2024, which declared Israeli presence in these occupied territories unlawful.

The EU urged the Israeli government to immediately reverse its decision, comply with international obligations, and ensure the safety and rights of Palestinian civilians living in the region.

Rising Concerns Over Violence

Beyond settlement expansion, the EU also expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of settler violence against Palestinians. The bloc reiterated its commitment to achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, based on the long-standing vision of two democratic states—Israel and Palestine—coexisting peacefully within recognized borders.

Global Reaction Intensifies

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also condemned Israel’s decision, stating that the approval of 34 new settlements violates international law and further complicates peace efforts.

Meanwhile, Israeli rights group Peace Now revealed that the decision was reportedly taken “secretly” in early April, raising questions about transparency within the Israeli administration.

The Palestinian Presidency strongly reacted to the development, calling it another “flagrant violation” of international law and an attempt to alter the ground reality in the occupied territories.

Political Context

According to reports, these newly approved settlements add to the 68 settlements already cleared since 2022, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government returned to power. This steady expansion has drawn increasing criticism from international communities and human rights organizations.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Israeli government regarding the latest wave of criticism.
