In a significant political development, Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Friday welcomed the High Court’s decision to restore the pension of rebel Congress MLAs, calling it a “victory of justice” and a strong message against what he described as unconstitutional governance.

Addressing a protest rally in Kullu, Thakur sharply criticized the government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, accusing it of using legislation as a tool for political vendetta. Referring to the court’s observation that “laws are made for the future, not for revenge,” he said the verdict exposes the flaws in the state government’s approach.

“The Chief Minister must understand that power is not meant to settle personal or political scores,” Thakur said, adding that such actions undermine democratic values.

The former Chief Minister also revealed that he had repeatedly cautioned the Assembly Speaker against allowing the House to become a platform for revenge politics. He stressed that laws passed without constitutional backing not only fail in courts but also damage the dignity of the Assembly.

Thakur further alleged that several decisions taken by the Sukhu government have been struck down by the High Court in recent months. He questioned the rationale behind such decisions despite the presence of legal advisors, stating that it leads to unnecessary wastage of public resources in litigation.

“Why take decisions that cannot stand constitutional scrutiny?” he asked, pointing out that even during panchayat elections, the government had faced multiple judicial setbacks.

Earlier in the day, the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a protest in the Kullu Assembly constituency against what it termed anti-people policies of the Congress government. The demonstration began at Dev Sadan and culminated at Dhalpur Chowk, where hundreds of party workers raised slogans over inflation and stalled development projects.

Local leaders, including Narottam Thakur and district president Amit Sood, also addressed the gathering, echoing concerns over governance and policy decisions.

Concluding his address, Thakur urged the state government to focus on public welfare rather than political conflicts. He warned that if corrective steps are not taken, the opposition would intensify its agitation in the coming days.
