The political temperature in Himachal Pradesh has risen sharply as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escalated its attack on the state government over the alleged Chester Hill land scam in Solan. The political temperature in Himachal Pradesh has risen sharply as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escalated its attack on the state government over the alleged Chester Hill land scam in Solan. The party has now demanded a High Court-monitored investigation, calling the issue a serious threat to administrative credibility and public trust.
Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Randhir Sharma expressed deep concern over the controversy, stating that the developments surrounding the case have shaken confidence in the state’s governance system. He described the situation as “unprecedented,” highlighting that an acting Chief Secretary had to publicly defend himself against allegations — a move rarely seen in bureaucratic circles.
“When senior officers are forced to come forward and clarify their positions while the government remains silent, it raises serious questions. It clearly indicates that something is not right,” Sharma said, adding that the silence from the top leadership only fuels public suspicion.
In a show of political strength and public outreach, the BJP has announced statewide protests across all 68 Assembly constituencies from April 8 to April 11. The party aims to mobilize citizens and demand accountability, transparency, and immediate action in the case.
The BJP is insisting that the investigation be conducted under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge to ensure fairness and eliminate any scope for political interference. Sharma alleged that the Chief Secretary’s claims against both former and current senior bureaucrats have sent shockwaves across the state, intensifying concerns about corruption at higher administrative levels.
Taking the attack further, the BJP accused the ruling Congress government of protecting controversial officials instead of taking strict action. According to Sharma, some of these officials are not only being shielded but are also being rewarded with extensions and key administrative roles.
The controversy has also spilled into other governance issues. Raising the entry tax matter, Sharma accused the Chief Minister of inconsistency, claiming that a statement made in the Assembly was contradicted by a notification issued the same evening. He criticized the imposition of a ₹100 entry tax on five-seater vehicles, calling it an unnecessary financial burden on the common man.
Additionally, the BJP alleged that the state government is attempting to delay and manipulate Panchayati Raj elections, further questioning its commitment to democratic processes.
As the political battle intensifies, the Chester Hill land scam is fast emerging as a major flashpoint in Himachal Pradesh politics, with both governance and accountability at the center of the debate. All eyes are now on whether the demand for a High Court-monitored probe gains traction in the coming days.
