Iranians Celebrate as Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei Named New Supreme Leader Amid Rising Regional Tensions
Large celebrations broke out across Iran after Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei was officially announced as the country’s new Supreme Leader, according to Iranian state media on Monday.
Large celebrations broke out across Iran after Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei was officially announced as the country’s new Supreme Leader, according to Iranian state media on Monday.
Hundreds of people gathered in public squares and streets in several cities, waving flags and chanting slogans as news spread that the Assembly of Experts had selected Mojtaba Khamenei to lead the Islamic Republic. The development comes at a crucial moment for the country, following the death of Iran’s longtime leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of the late Supreme Leader and has long been considered an influential figure within Iran’s political and religious circles. His appointment quickly received backing from powerful institutions, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the General Staff of the Armed Forces, both of which pledged their loyalty and support to the new leader.
Public celebrations across Iran
According to reports by state broadcaster Press TV, citizens poured into the streets in large numbers soon after the announcement. In many areas, people celebrated with fireworks, music, and chants supporting the country’s leadership transition.
The celebrations marked a significant moment for Iran as it enters a new political phase following the loss of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led the country for decades.
Tensions escalate in the region
The leadership change comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Shortly after Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment was announced, Iranian state media reported that Iran launched two waves of missiles toward Israel.
According to a report by the Jerusalem Post, fragments from the missiles fell in central Israel, injuring at least one person.
These developments follow a dramatic escalation that began on February 28, when a joint US–Israel military strike targeted Iranian territory. The strike reportedly resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials, triggering a strong military response from Tehran.
Humanitarian toll continues to rise
The conflict has now entered its ninth day, and the humanitarian situation is becoming increasingly severe. Reports from Al Jazeera indicate that more than 1,300 people have been killed since the violence began.
The ongoing fighting has also forced a massive displacement of civilians. According to international agencies, around 100,000 people have fled their homes, seeking safety as attacks continue across parts of the region.
The UN refugee agency has warned that relief efforts are under significant strain as calls for emergency assistance continue to surge.
A critical moment for Iran
While many Iranians celebrated the appointment of their new Supreme Leader, the country now faces a complex and uncertain future. With regional tensions escalating and humanitarian challenges growing, the leadership of Mojtaba Khamenei begins at a time when Iran is navigating one of the most sensitive periods in recent history.
