In a significant move aimed at boosting sustainable development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation between India and Israel in agriculture and water management.

The renewed focus comes as both nations recognize the growing importance of water security, climate resilience, and modern agricultural practices in ensuring long-term economic and environmental stability.

Strong Focus on Water and Sustainable Development

According to the joint statement released on Thursday, both leaders emphasized strengthening collaboration in critical areas such as:

  • Water conservation
  • Wastewater treatment and reuse for agriculture
  • Desalination technologies
  • Water utility reforms
  • Cleaning of the Ganges and other rivers using advanced water technologies

This partnership is seen as a crucial step toward addressing water scarcity and improving irrigation efficiency, especially in water-stressed regions of India.

Empowering Indian Farmers Through Innovation

A major highlight of the partnership is the ongoing capacity-building program in agriculture, led by MASHAV in collaboration with India’s Ministry of Agriculture.

This multi-dimensional initiative has already benefited hundreds of thousands of Indian farmers by introducing innovative farming techniques, modern irrigation systems, and advanced crop management practices.

Currently, 35 Centres of Excellence in agriculture are operational across India, with 8 more being jointly developed. These centres have collectively trained over one million Indian farmers, helping them increase productivity and adopt climate-smart practices.

Boost to Agricultural Research and Innovation

Both Prime Ministers also welcomed the signing of an MoU between Indian Council of Agricultural Research and MASHAV to establish the India-Israel Innovation Centre for Agriculture (IINCA).

This new initiative aims to:

  • Drive agricultural research and innovation
  • Enhance productivity
  • Promote sustainable farming growth

Additionally, 20 Joint Fellowships for Agricultural Research will enable Indian researchers to collaborate with Israel’s Volcani Agriculture Research Organization, strengthening knowledge exchange between the two countries.

Expanding Cooperation to Fisheries and Climate Action

The leaders also welcomed the Declaration of Intent signed in January 2026 to enhance cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture. Plans are underway to establish a Joint Centre of Excellence in Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Beyond agriculture, both sides underlined the importance of collaboration in climate change and environmental protection. They agreed to conduct bilateral consultations focused on:

  • Climate action and capacity building
  • Technology transfer
  • Circular economy promotion
  • Biodiversity protection
  • Environmental pollution prevention

Why This Partnership Matters

India and Israel have steadily built a strategic relationship over the years, especially in agriculture and water technology. With climate challenges intensifying and food security becoming a global concern, this renewed commitment signals a forward-looking partnership focused not just on growth, but on sustainability.

For millions of Indian farmers, this collaboration could translate into better yields, smarter water use, and stronger resilience against climate change — a step that could shape the future of Indian agriculture.
