In a disturbing development from Bangladesh, police have arrested another accused in the brutal lynching and burning of minority community member Dipu Chandra Das, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 23.
The latest arrest was made by the Detective Branch in Mymensingh, where 24-year-old tea stall owner Md Bablu Mia was taken into custody on Sunday night from Dubaliapara in Bhaluka. According to investigators, Bablu later gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a Senior Judicial Magistrate’s court and has been sent to jail.
Key Role in Mobilising the Mob
Police officials say Bablu was present at the factory gate on February 18, when 27-year-old garment worker Dipu Chandra Das was attacked. He is accused of playing a significant role in gathering people and mobilising the crowd with slogans before the situation spiralled into mob violence.
A senior officer, quoted by local media, confirmed that three crucial witnesses have recorded statements under Section 164, while 12 accused have submitted confessional statements so far. Authorities are continuing efforts to identify and arrest the remaining suspects involved in the incident.
What Happened on February 18?
Dipu, a resident of Mokamia Kanda village in Tarakanda upazila, had been working for two years at Pioneer Knitwears (BD) Limited in Bhaluka. According to reports, he was beaten to death and his body was set ablaze by a mob following allegations that he made derogatory remarks about Islam.
The victim’s younger brother, Apu Chandra Das, later filed a case with Bhaluka Model Police Station against 150 unidentified individuals, seeking justice for the horrific killing.
A Case That Shook the Community
The incident has sent shockwaves across the region, raising serious concerns about mob violence and the safety of minority communities. As the investigation progresses, authorities say they are determined to ensure accountability and prevent such tragedies in the future.
With 23 arrests made and more suspects yet to be apprehended, the case remains under close watch — both locally and internationally.
