After days of bright sunshine and rising temperatures, winter is set to make a brief comeback in Himachal Pradesh. The higher reaches of the state are likely to witness fresh snowfall and rainfall on February 27 and 28, bringing relief to snow lovers and farmers alike.
According to the Meteorological Department, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact the Western Himalayan region starting February 26. As a result, districts like Kinnaur, Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti are likely to receive snowfall and rainfall during this period. However, the rest of the state is expected to experience largely dry weather.
Temperatures Above Normal for Now
Over the past 24 hours, most parts of Himachal witnessed dry conditions with clear skies and pleasant sunshine. Interestingly, both minimum and maximum temperatures remained above normal in several areas.
Minimum temperatures across the state ranged between minus 5°C and 11°C, which is around 2–3 degrees above normal. Maximum temperatures were also higher than usual, staying between 6°C and 28°C — nearly 3–6 degrees above seasonal averages.
In the capital city of Shimla, the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.5°C. Popular tourist destination Manali saw the mercury drop to 2.9°C. Meanwhile, Dharamsala recorded 10.9°C.
Among the coldest places, Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti recorded a chilling minus 4.9°C, while Tabo remained close behind at minus 4.3°C.
On the warmer side, Neri village in Hamirpur turned out to be the hottest location in the state with a maximum temperature of 28.2°C — a clear reminder that winter’s grip is gradually loosening in lower regions.
What to Expect Next?
The Meteorological Department has indicated that temperatures are likely to remain near normal over the next few days, with no significant fluctuations expected immediately.
For travelers planning a trip to the hills, especially to snow-prone areas, the February 27–28 spell could offer fresh snowfall views. At the same time, residents in higher reaches are advised to stay updated with local weather advisories.
As Himachal stands at the crossroads of winter and early spring, the coming days may once again paint the mountains white — even if only briefly.
