US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that India has committed to stop buying additional crude oil from Russia, days after New Delhi maintained that its energy procurement decisions would be guided by “national interests.”
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Rubio said, “In our conversations with India, we’ve gotten their commitment to stop buying additional Russian oil.” He was responding to a question regarding the Russia-Ukraine war and the sanctions imposed on Moscow.
Trump’s Earlier Claim on Oil Procurement
US President Donald Trump, while announcing a trade deal with New Delhi earlier this month, had also claimed that India agreed to halt crude oil imports from Russia.
Subsequently, Washington has reiterated on multiple occasions that India would cease further purchases of Russian oil. In an executive order following the trade deal announcement, Trump rolled back an additional 25 per cent tariff imposed in August last year on India over its procurement of Russian crude.
India Reiterates “National Interest” Approach
India, however, has maintained that it will continue to diversify its crude oil sourcing to ensure supply chain stability.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently stated that India would maintain multiple sources for crude oil purchases, with national interests remaining the “guiding factor” in energy procurement decisions.
The remarks come amid ongoing geopolitical tensions linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Western sanctions on Moscow.
