Shimla/Kangra: The historic Pathankot–Joginder Nagar narrow gauge railway line, one of India’s oldest hill rail routes, is awaiting long-pending modernisation as demands grow for its conversion into broad gauge to meet present-day transport needs.
Commissioned in 1926 during British rule, the railway line was originally constructed to transport heavy machinery imported from London for the Shanan Hydel Power Project at Joginder Nagar. At a time when road connectivity in the region was minimal, the line played a pivotal role in supporting one of northern India’s earliest large-scale hydroelectric ventures.
Stretching across the scenic Kangra Valley, the railway later became a lifeline for residents of remote hill areas, linking Pathankot with Kangra, Palampur, Baijnath and Joginder Nagar. For decades, it served passengers, farmers, traders and students, offering an affordable and dependable transport option.
Railway historians regard the route as a fine example of early 20th-century hill railway engineering. The track features multiple tunnels, bridges and sharp curves designed to navigate challenging mountainous terrain. Given its legacy, it is considered an important part of India’s railway heritage.
Operational Challenges
Nearly a century after its commissioning, however, the narrow gauge line faces significant operational constraints. Low speeds, limited carrying capacity, ageing infrastructure and recurring maintenance issues have reduced its efficiency. Passenger footfall has declined over the years as road transport networks expanded, though the line continues to operate partially.
Earlier, seven trains used to operate daily on the route. However, following the collapse of the Chakki railway bridge three years ago, regular services were suspended, causing inconvenience to commuters. At present, train services are running only between Kangra and Joginder Nagar.
Calls for Broad Gauge Conversion
Local residents and stakeholders have repeatedly demanded the conversion of the line into broad gauge, arguing that enhanced rail connectivity could significantly boost passenger movement, tourism and freight transport in the region. They contend that modern rail infrastructure would also provide a safer and more sustainable alternative to road travel in the hilly terrain of Himachal Pradesh.
Despite its historical importance and continued relevance, no major upgrade has been officially announced so far. As the railway line approaches its centenary year, its future remains uncertain, prompting renewed calls for a comprehensive review of its viability and preservation.
Survey Completed, Bridge to Reopen Soon
Kangra MP Rajiv Bhardwaj, when contacted, said he was aware of the situation.
“The survey for expansion of this rail track into broad gauge has already been completed. A new railway bridge over the Chakki river will be opened for traffic soon after completion of the technical formalities. Seven trains will resume operations on this route before March this year,” he said.
If implemented as promised, the restoration of services and potential upgrade could mark a significant step toward reviving the historic rail corridor.
