‘Maharashtra Has Quit Them’: BJP’s BMC Victory Holds Personal Significance for Kangana Ranaut After 2020 Demolition

Actor-turned-politician and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Thursday hailed the BJP’s decisive victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, calling it a historic mandate that ended the Shiv Sena’s decades-long dominance over India’s richest civic body.

Congratulating the party leadership, Ranaut told NDTV that the result marked a sweeping endorsement of the BJP in Maharashtra.
“I am absolutely thrilled with the BJP’s landslide victory in the Maharashtra BMC election. I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ji, and the entire BJP family of Maharashtra for this incredible saffron sweep all the way,” she said.

Beyond its political implications, the outcome also holds deep personal significance for Ranaut. In September 2020, the BMC—then controlled by the undivided Shiv Sena—had demolished a portion of her Mumbai office, a move that triggered a major political and legal controversy. The Bombay High Court later described the demolition as “nothing but malice in law.”

Referring to the episode, Ranaut said, “And for those who abused me, demolished my house, called me names, threatened me to leave Maharashtra, today Maharashtra has quit them.”

She added that the verdict was a rejection of what she termed political intimidation and misogyny. “I am glad such women-haters, bullies and nepotism mafia are being shown their right place by the janta janardan,” the BJP MP said.

The BJP’s victory in the BMC elections is being seen as a major political shift in Mumbai’s civic politics and a significant boost for the ruling party ahead of upcoming state and national electoral battles.
