Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said she presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump during a closed-door meeting at the White House, calling it a symbolic gesture recognising his “commitment to Venezuela’s freedom.”

Trump later confirmed on social media that Machado had left the medal with him, calling the meeting an honour. However, the Nobel Institute clarified that the prize cannot formally be transferred, making the act symbolic rather than official.

Despite the warm exchange, the meeting did not result in any clear US commitment on fresh elections in Venezuela. Trump has publicly expressed doubts about Machado’s ability to lead, signalling openness to working with interim President Delcy Rodríguez, a former Maduro ally.

Machado, who spent nearly a year in hiding before receiving the prize through her daughter in Norway, told supporters afterward, “We can count on President Trump,” though she offered no details of policy assurances.

US officials said the meeting was a “frank and positive discussion,” but reiterated that Trump’s position on Venezuelan leadership remains unchanged.
