The charred remains of seven more bodies were recovered on Tuesday from the rubble at Arki bazar during search operations carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), following a massive fire that engulfed several buildings on Sunday night. With the latest recoveries, the death toll in the incident has risen to 10, after three fatalities were reported earlier.
On Monday, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) had recovered the remains of two victims along with the body of an eight-year-old boy.
The NDRF resumed search operations early Tuesday to trace the remaining missing persons, deploying trained sniffer dogs. The first body was located at around 9.45 am. As the operation progressed, teams demolished the unstable walls of a severely damaged building that posed a safety threat to rescue personnel. Between 12.45 pm and 1.15 pm, several more charred remains were retrieved from beneath the debris.
Nine Nepalese nationals — including two men, two women and five children — were reported missing in the fire. Solan Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh said the recovered remains were burnt beyond recognition and have been sent to the forensic science laboratory for DNA analysis.
Due to the narrow lanes in the affected area, officials shifted the debris to the nearby Chowgan ground. Search operations will resume there on Wednesday to locate the remaining bodies.
